Gophers are one of the most common problems on slopes around Winchester, especially in newer neighborhoods where the ground is still soft and open. They tunnel in from underneath and go after the roots of anything you plant. Most people do not know they have a problem until a young tree starts leaning or a shrub dies out of nowhere.
This home had a long slope running between the block wall and the sidewalk, with a few young trees staked along it. The rest was dry dirt and old debris. The goal was to protect those trees and anything planted later, and give the slope a finished look at the same time.
We started by clearing the whole slope. Dry weeds, old debris and loose junk all came out so the wire could lay flat against the soil. If the wire is sitting on top of clutter, it leaves gaps, and gophers will find them.
Next we rolled out gopher wire across the entire slope, from the base of the wall down to the sidewalk. Every strip overlaps the next so there are no open seams, and we cut and fit the wire around each tree trunk by hand. Along the bottom edge, we staked it down so it stays in place on the grade and does not slide over time.
Then we covered everything with a thick layer of red mulch, wall to sidewalk. The mulch hides the wire completely, but it also does a lot of work on its own. It keeps the soil cooler in the summer, helps hold water around the roots so the trees need less of it, keeps weeds down, and stops dirt from washing onto the sidewalk when it rains.
The nice thing about wire is that it keeps working. Traps only deal with the gopher that is there right now. Wire keeps the next ones out too, and once it is covered, there is nothing to reset or check.
Now the slope looks clean and finished from the street. Red mulch against the block wall, young trees standing straight, and a clean edge along the sidewalk. And underneath, the roots are protected for the long run.
