We started with the basics by preparing the ground. The dirt lot was graded so water flows away from the house and drains properly. We cleared debris, leveled the surface, and compacted the soil to give the hardscape and turf a strong base. Drain lines were kept open so the new yard wouldn’t have issues with standing water later.

Concrete was next. We set forms for the main patio off the back slider and for square pads that stretch down the side yard. Reinforcement steel was placed, elevations were checked, and concrete was poured and finished smoothly. The straight lines and clean joints give the space structure while making sure the slabs will last for years without cracking.

Once the concrete cured, we built out the artificial turf. A compacted base layer and weed barrier went down first, then we installed high-quality turf around the patio and in between the pads. Seams were joined, nails and adhesive locked everything into place, and infill was brushed in to make the blades stand tall. This gave the yard a green look with no mowing, watering, or patchy spots to worry about.

We added rock beds along the fence and block wall to frame the turf and concrete. The rock helps with drainage, cuts down on weeds, and gives the plants a solid base to stand out against. It also breaks up the space visually, adding texture and contrast to the bright green turf. The edges were finished evenly so the transition between turf and rock blends in cleanly.

Planting came after the hardscape was finished. We added a variety of drought-tolerant plants and shrubs along the edges, plus a young shade tree for balance and a focal point. Each was planted with amended soil for healthy roots and staked where needed. As they grow, they’ll add texture and color without needing much water.

To make sure the plants stay healthy, we installed a drip irrigation system on automatic timers. Every plant has a direct water source, hidden neatly under the rock beds. This saves water compared to sprinklers and keeps maintenance simple, just set the timer and let it run.

Lighting was the finishing touch. Low-voltage LED fixtures were installed to highlight the new tree, brighten the walkways, and make the backyard usable after dark. The transformer is connected to a timer and photocell so the lights come on automatically each evening and shut off in the morning when daylight returns.

The transformation is night and day compared to the plain dirt lot we started with. Now there’s a smooth patio for outdoor furniture, a modern turf-and-concrete grid pattern, clean rock borders, fresh planting with irrigation, and lighting that makes the space inviting at all hours.
