This Winchester backyard had a long, narrow strip running between the block wall and the house, right next to the turf. It is a common setup in newer neighborhoods, and it is a hard space to use. It is too narrow for a patio, grass struggles there, and bare dirt turns to mud when it rains and dust the rest of the year.

Pea gravel was the right fit. It is small, smooth, rounded stone in a mix of gray, tan and white. Because it has no sharp edges, it is comfortable to walk on and safe for kids and pets, which makes it a better choice than crushed rock for a space people actually use.

We started by leveling the dirt so the gravel would sit even from end to end. Then we spread it across the entire strip, wall to wall, from the edge of the turf to the far corner. The two drains along the house were kept open and clear so rainwater still has a way out, and the irrigation valves in the back corner were left easy to reach. Where the gravel meets the turf, we kept a clean line so the two look like they belong together.

A lot of homeowners choose pea gravel for spaces like this because it handles the problems dirt and grass cannot. Water soaks right through it instead of sitting on top, so there is no more mud or standing puddles after a storm. There is nothing to mow, water or fertilize, which saves time and cuts down on the water bill. It is also much more affordable than concrete or pavers when you are covering a large area, and the mixed colors match block walls and stucco so the yard looks finished instead of patched together. Keeping it up is simple too. If it shifts, a quick rake smooths it back out, and a light top off every few years keeps it looking full.

Now the side of this backyard looks finished instead of forgotten. No more mud, no more dust, and a space that is easy to walk through and easy to take care of.

If you have a side yard or back strip that is still dirt, a spot where grass keeps dying, or an area you want looking clean without the cost of concrete, pea gravel is one of the simplest upgrades you can make.
